To promote research on economic measurement and to strengthen ties between the academic and practitioner communities working in this area, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the Conference on Research on Income and Wealth (CRIW) will sponsor five fellowships for economic statisticians working in government statistical agencies and international organizations to attend the CRIW meeting at the 2023 NBER Summer Institute in Cambridge, MA. The CRIW meeting will take place on July 17-18, 2023. Fellows will participate in the research meeting and have an opportunity to interact with leading scholars and practitioners in the field of economic measurement. This fellowship program celebrates the intellectual legacy of long-time CRIW member and University of Pennsylvania faculty member Robert Summers, who pioneered the study of international price and output comparisons.
The fellowship will cover economy-class travel costs to attend the research meeting, as well as local hotel accommodations for up to three nights and other conference-related costs. Reimbursements will be subject to NBER’s travel regulations, which can be found at http://conference.nber.org/confer/travelreg.html.
To be eligible for fellowship support, applicants must have expertise in the field of economic measurement and be employed at a statistical agency or another organization, such as the OECD or IMF, that is engaged in the creation and dissemination of economic statistics. Fellows may work on any aspect of economic measurement, but applications from those engaged in the design and construction of international comparative data are especially welcomed.
To apply, applicants should prepare a single PDF file with a cover page including name, email address, and current affiliation, and a two-page summary of expertise and current research interests in economic measurement, including references and/or links to published papers, links to information about data products the applicant has been involved in constructing, and other relevant information. The application file should be uploaded to:
http://conference.nber.org/confsubmit/backend/cfp?id=CRIWs23a
no later than 11:59 pm (Boston time) on Wednesday, April 5, 2023. Applications that are not complete by that time will not be considered.
Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of Katharine Abraham (University of Maryland and NBER), Carol Corrado (Conference Board), Lucy Eldridge (US Bureau of Labor Statistics) and James Poterba (MIT and NBER). Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decisions by May 3, 2023. The NBER conference department will provide invitations to attend the CRIW Summer Institute meeting, handle hotel arrangements, and process reimbursements for conference-related travel.
Selection as a fellow will permit participation in the 2023 Summer Institute, but will not guarantee an opportunity to present a paper. Applicants who wish to submit papers for potential presentation must do so separately by March 22, 2023. The call for papers for the CRIW meeting, as well as the other meetings that constitute the Summer Institute, may be found at
